September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to promote action, raise awareness and spread hope.
Addressing mental health issues and especially becoming aware of suicide prevention is vital in our society. Suicide remains the 2nd largest cause of death for both ages 10-14 and 15-24 year-olds.
Our kind, beautiful daughter Megan died by suicide six years ago, and the void in our lives and sadness in our hearts continues, as it always will. Suicide survivors carry a heavy burden of questions like “what if” and “how did this ever happen,” but there are never answers to soothe the pain of families and friends in the wake of a suicide.
Meg’s Legacy was created so we can make a difference in others’ lives. Suicide Prevention Month reminds us that talking about suicide isn’t harmful — silence is. One honest conversation can be a turning point in someone’s life.
Ask questions and listen. Breaking the stigma around mental health can save lives.
Best,
Larry Butz
